Statement of support for the Rainbow Friendship Rally on 27 June 2009

On the occasion of the Rainbow Friendship Rally in Sofia on 27 June 2009, I would like to extend a message of support to all those that are celebrating diversity on this day. Unfortunately, all over the world, members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community are subject to discrimination, often hidden and with impunity. We reject and condemn any discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.  It is incompatible with the basic principles and values on which the EU is founded: equal rights and opportunities. In Europe, there is no such thing as a little bit equal. We are and will remain committed to the prevention and eradication of discrimination based on the six grounds mentioned in Article 13 of the EC Treaty, which include sexual orientation. Guaranteeing human rights of LGBT persons requires an active, consistent, determined policy of the authorities, both at the level of central government and at the level of local government, as well as by other state institutions. We express our wholehearted support to all those who - whether as individuals, working for government organisations or for nongovernmental organisations – are working to ensure that all of us can fully enjoy our human rights, without distinction of any kind, as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which all the EU countries have subscribed. Celebrating diversity is not about promoting a lifestyle, it is about promoting respect for fundamental human rights. It is about the very essence of our European values.

The Dutch Minister for European Affairs, Mr. Frans Timmermans said in Paris on 15 May 2009 during the World Congress on Human rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity: “ My human rights are not worth anything, if those of LGBT-people are violated … Not only today, not only here, but everywhere and at every moment, the Netherlands government works for the emancipation of the LGBT community. In its own country, but also elsewhere. That starts with fighting violations of the rights of LGBT-persons, and it is continued with promoting acceptance in society”

I wish all participants in the Rainbow Friendship Rally a happy and peaceful celebration of diversity.
